Truck drivers threaten strike over extortion in Lagos.

Articulated truck drivers are threatening to embark on an indefinite strike over extortion of members by officials of the security agencies in Apapa Port, Lagos.

Following the planned industrial action, there is palpable tension around the port.

Some of the truck drivers at the Apapa and Tin Can ports yesterday refused to work until heads of the agencies address the issues of alleged extortion. Ninety-Eight  percent of cargoes in the Ports are being evacuated by road transportation.

The President of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), Chief Remi Ogungbemi, said yesterday the action was basically embarked upon by individual truck owners and drivers who were tired of the situation.

He alleged that the situation was getting chaotic despite government intervention and introduction of call up system.

He said: It has not been announced officially but truck drivers have down tool on individual basis but in the next 48 hours, there will be an announcement and we want to inform the authority before going on strike.”
